[Debate] (Fwd) Social media v SA fracking: how effective?

Does anyone have any idea whether this sort of slacktivism delivers the
goods?

Does the SA government get petitions like this and quiver? Do
communities at the base get a wider support network? Does the world
learn more about the problem? Do other environmental and social justice
movements pick up the baton and run further, faster? Does Care2.com do
as good or a better job than Avaaz? Have we seen anything in SA along
these lines?

I have no idea about the answers so am curious if anyone has thought
about these tactics.

Ciao,
Patrick

Hi Patrick,

In South Africa, the government is considering whether to remove the
moratorium that prohibits fracking -- a practice that destroys our
environment by creating greenhouse gases, consuming water in
unsustainable volumes, increasing air pollution, putting people at risk
of toxic pollution and more.

*Don't let fracking endanger South Africa's environment and people: *

Fracking is already harmful to people and the environment, but South
Africa has no trained supervisors for fracking operations. This lack of
supervisors coupled with a low price of gas will mean companies cut all
the corners they can, endangering the country /even more./

Tell the South African government removing the moratorium on fracking
will hurt South Africa and its citizens »
