Exactly. If ever there was a match-up that fitted glove-in-hand, it was between the press and JM. Latter played them like a fiddle, and they cashed in on it. But the punch 'n judy show didn't do political analysis many favours, and the NYRB piece is no exception. All focus once again on an individual personality and much too little (in this piece, hardly any) recognition of the broader currents that allowed JM to ascend and fly so high for so long. The spectacle was and remains really about the ANC, something Steve Friedman, bless him, noticed a long way back already.
