Security seems to me to be _the key issue_ in the aftermath of the
financial crises in the North.

As the populations of the North age, security becomes an even more
important issue than before. And yet, even the factions of the power
elites arguing for short-term fiscal expansion tend to be committed to
long-term structural retrenchment of citizen entitlements.

Genderwise, moreover, women need security -- from physical to income
security -- more than men. Women live longer than men, so women would
especially want to know if there will be a government committed to
providing social security for them to live on in their old age, for
_decades_ after their retirement, even long after their spouses are
gone.
