Minister reassures police reservists they are needed

Safety and Security Minister Nathi Mthethwa says he knows that police
reservists are a valuable asset in the fight against crime.

He addressed reservists outside Luthuli House in Johannesburg after a
protest there on Monday.

The reservists want to be permanently employed in the police service.

Mthethwa told the demonstrators that the African National Congress
government cared for them.

He said the process of integrating reservists into the SAPS was
currently underway.

The minister told them he knew some of them ran police stations due to a
lack of staff.

He said a summit would be held later this month to discuss key issues
including, decent salaries and working hours.
