StreetNet celebrates the efforts of street vendors who are organising as
autonomous or own-account workers to solve their workplace problems. By
organising into democratic structures street vendors are building a
stronger voice that requires their recognition at local, national and
international levels.
Solidarity with Warwick Market traders in Durban
In the preparation for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa in 2010,
Ethekwini Municipality is moving 700 market traders who earn their
living as fruit and vegetable traders in the Early Morning Market which
is to be demolished to make way for a shopping mall.
WCCA Campaign, led by StreetNet held a solidarity walk-about joined by
members of various street traders’ organizations, SAMWU (SA Workers’
Union), SANCO (SA National Civics Organisation), SDCEA (South Durban
Community Environmental Action), KZN Fishermen’s Forum, SASEWA (SA
Self-Employed Women’s Association), Warwick Market Traders’ Association
and Warwick Precinct Plan Stakeholders’ Forum, on 20th April 2009. The
WCCA Campaign demand is for proper and meaningful consultation with the
market and street traders in the build up to the FIFA World Cup.
