The UKZN Centre for Civil Society is proud to welcome the SA Communist
Party's Durban members, the university community and the general public
for the Chris Hani Lecture

Speaker: Jeremy Cronin
Date: Thursday, 16 April 2008
Time: 12:30-2 pm
Venue: Howard College Theatre, UKZN Howard College Campus

The Chris Hani Lecture commemorates the great SACP leader whose
assassination on 10 April 1993 galvanised negotiators to agree on the
1994 election date that gave South Africa democracy.

Jeremy Cronin is deputy general secretary of the SA Communist Party and
a leading ANC Member of Parliament, chairing the transport committee.
Cronin was a lecturer in the Philosophy department of the University of
Cape Town during the early 1970s, when he began work in the propaganda
unit of the SACP. The Bureau of State Security arrested Cronin on
charges under the Terrorism and Internal Security Acts in 1976. He pled
guilty and served seven years in Pretoria, following which he worked
with the United Democratic Front. Later he lived in London and Lusaka
where he worked closely with Joe Slovo for the ANC/SACP alliance. Cronin
is also one of SA's greatest poets. His first book, Inside, was
published in 1984 and other collections include Even the Dead: Poems,
Parables and a Jeremiad (1997), Inside and Out (1999) and More than a
Casual Contact (2006).
