The Department of Sociology and the Amandla Forum invite you to our next
Film Evening and Open Conversation on
TRANSPORT FOR ALL:
Debating alternative forms of Public Transport
The evening will include a panel discussion and films which explore
alternative systems of public transport such as those in Curitiba,
Brazil and Bogota, Columbia. We need to learn from these models because
there is an urgent need for a system of safe, reliable, affordable and
sustainable public transport system in Gauteng. The present system
involves an unreliable and ageing rail infrastructure and a lack of
safety on trains. High car densities on the roads involve increasing
pollution and accidents amounting to some 40 deaths per day. Many taxis
and buses are unsafe and unreliable. The Gautrain will not address these
issues that disproportionately affect working people and the poor. The
cities of Curitiba and Bogota have addressed similar crises through
innovative solutions that address the needs of the vast majority of
their citizens. Through films of these experiences and a panel
discussion, we hope to open a much-needed debate on alternatives for
South Africa's transport needs.
