LECTURER: SOCIOLOGY
SCHOOL OF SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL STUDIES
HOWARD COLLEGE CAMPUS
REFERENCE NO.: HDSS36/2008
The Sociology Programme at Howard College is a dynamic place to work. We
have a diverse group
of academic staff, most of whom are actively engaged in both theorising
the world around them, and
in contributing actively to changing it. This programme has a long
history of producing what are best
termed ‘public sociologists’. At present, the Sociology programme
specialises in issues of research
methods, race studies, identity studies, the sociology of policing and
security, gender and sexuality
and environmental studies.
We are currently one of the largest programmes at UKZN and we offer a
range of courses that give
students who do Sociology the edge in understanding the world in which
we live. It introduces
students to the many fascinating, hopeful and sometimes tragic
interactions which we engage in our
everyday lives. Like most Sociology Programmes throughout the world,
what we aim to do is make
the unexceptional exceptional. Our goals are to challenge
common-sensical thinking through a
serious engagement with theory and research methods. We also provide our
students with a range of
social issues to study, both empirically and theoretically. As a
programme, we are interested in
training students to think about how we as a society, and as
intellectuals, respond to the rapidly
changing world that we inhabit.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• A completed masters degree in an appropriate field;
• Evidence of active research in the discipline;
• Teaching experience at the tertiary level;
• Competence in Microsoft Office Suite programmes.
ADVANTAGES
• A doctorate in an appropriate field or substantial progress towards
completion;
• Evidence of successful postgraduate supervision;
• Evidence of ability to teach sociological theory and research methods;
• Specialisation in the areas of the Sociology of Health, Social
Movements or Sociology of
Education or other areas that would fit in with the Programme’s current
focus;
• An interest in curriculum development within an African-centered
Sociology Programme.
