Doug:
I fear that Yoshie, with her 'mores' and 'lesses', her 'betters' and
'worses' is herself 'better' at mechanics than dialectics.
Here she adds up 'anti-imperialists' (this quality clearly being 'better'
than any others they might or might not possess) and finds her pile larger
or 'better' than that of the Doug Henwoods in NYC or at WBAI.
I am reminded of Stalin on Catholicism, with his dismissive 'how many
divisions has the pope?' As we know, Stalin had more divisions, but his
Soviet Union?...It went thataway...
It is one of those many ironies of history, of which Isaac Deutscher wrote,
that this (pre?) mediaeval church has outlasted a modernist, rationalist,
ideology and state - one that in its thought, structure and behaviour
reproduced so much of that church which Stalin castigated.
Anti-imperialism, dear Yoshie, like anti-capitalism, is simply not enough.
Nowadays people and peoples demand more: liberty, equality, solidarity,
peace, environmental justice, tolerance, Bread and roses too.
The pecadilos of corrupt, authoritarian, demagogic and militaristic leaders?
History will not absolve them.
Peter W.
