Durban bus drivers strike
12 May 2008, 13:03

Thousands were left stranded in Durban as workers at Durban's largest
bus company Remant Alton went on strike on Monday morning.

Remant Alton's human resource executive Kisa Dlamini said company's
entire service had been halted by the strike.

He said the company, which took over the running of Durban's municipal
bus fleet in 2004, transports almost 200 000 people daily.

Workers are demanding an increase of R800 a month, back-dated to November.

South African Transport and Allied Workers Union spokesperson Justice
Xaba said negotiations on Monday had failed.

Both Xaba and Dlamini said an urgent court interdict had been obtained
by the company, but further details were not available.

Dlamini said there had been no reports of intimidation or violence.

The Durban Chamber of Commerce acting chief executive said that there
had been no immediate reports of businesses in the city being affected.

Workers at other bus companies in the greater Durban area were not on
strike. - Sapa
