Thailand faces protests over high cost of living
Updated Fri Jun 13, 2008 4:50pm AEST
In Thailand there are warnings of protests across the country by groups
ranging from farmers to truckers who are struggling with the soaring
cost of living.
The Bangkok Post report says the government is facing not only the
prolonged anti-government demonstration by the People's Alliance for
Democracy but also protests by other interest groups that are spreading
to other parts of the country.
It says garlic farmers blocked traffic in several districts, demanded
the government buy their garlic at guaranteed prices.
At the same time, hundreds of truckers have stopped work, threatening a
strike and blockade the nation's highways next week if the government
fails to respond quickly to their plight.
