ZINASU Media Alert

Ref: 12/06/rf 1

For Immediate Release

The Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU), www.zinasu.org, calls
for immediate and unconditional release of the arrested Movement for
Democratic Change (MDC) leadership. MDC secretary General Tendai Biti
was arrested at the Harare International Airport and MDC President
Morgan Tsvangirai and 20 others party leaders were arrested in Kwekwe
today, 12 June 2008. The Military Junta in Harare want to charge
Tendai Biti with treason.

We view the on-going State-sponsored terror campaign as a well
miscalculated political strategy by the blood-thirsty and power-hungry
ZANU PF maniacs to annihilate the MDC and continue to misrule as a
fully-fledged Military Junta. They will not succeed. The people of
Zimbabwe turned the page and opened a new chapter on March 29. They
are not going back.

Further, we wish to make a categorical statement that the students of
Zimbabwe who have in the past resisted One-Party State overtures by
this rogue regime will continue to stand for the truth. As students it
is still within our democratic right to disobey an illegitimate regime
that thrives on torture, political disappearances, abduction and
assassination of political opponents.

We also call upon SADC, AU and UN to provide decisive leadership and
play their preventive and mitigatory role to protect the people of
Zimbabwe. Suffice to state that the UN Summit of World Leaders in 2005
endorsed the responsibility to protect.
