World Bank antigraft chief quits

WASHINGTON — Suzanne Folsom, director of the World Bank’s anticorruption
department, has resigned after almost five years of clashes with staff,
which a former Federal Reserve chairman said had undermined the efforts
of her office.

Folsom, a lawyer who joined the bank in 2003, was appointed by former
World Bank president Paul Wolfowitz, who resigned last year and was
replaced by former US deputy secretary of state Robert Zoellick.

Folsom’s departure on Wednesday ended an era of stormy relations between
bank employees and associates of Wolfowitz, a former Bush administration
official who headed the bank from June 2005 to June last year. Zoellick
and former Fed chairman Paul Volcker praised Folsom’s efforts to counter
graft in World Bank projects. Bloomberg
