Hi Mandi,
It depends what "mean" means.
No! That was a joke. Start again. One can have a discussion about this. In
Peter McLaren's glossary of Freirean terms" he defines a "codification" as
follows: "A codification is a representation of the learner's day-to-day
situations. It can be a photograph, a drawing, or even a word. As a
representation, the photograph or word is an abstraction which permits
dialogue leading to an analysis of the concrete reality represented.
Codifications mediate between reality and its theoretical context, as well
as between educators and learners who together seek to unveil the meanings
of their existence."
In the Freirean framework, it is not the case that anything goes. The whole
Freirean body of thought is an attempt to critique, or to discriminate,
between what is educational and what is not.
If you say that the definition of "codification" above is clumsy, I would
agree. I think the essence of the matter is that the gathering is
intentional, and not arbitrary, and the intention is to change the world,
and not simply to accept it or learn "about" it. The point is that the
students/teachers are all subjects, in pursuit of agency, and that is what
they are there for, and only that, because that is what makes them human.
"Is the moon made of cheese" won't do, unless you are fully expecting the
people to rear up on you and have you for taking the piss. That might be
educational for them, but not nice for you.
Look, in the end it's no particularly big deal. I think the chosen title is
crap. It's a judgement. I have to be a subject too. O.k.?
