Stinky sludge in Durban harbour

Veteran yachtsperson Chris Bonnet is fuming over failure to stem a thick
stream of dark sludge which he says has been leaking into Durban harbour
for the past five days.
Bonnet, the head of the Sunsail sailing academy, said a dark grey sludge
had been flowing unchecked from the storm-water drain at Lavender Creek,
close to the yacht clubs and Wilson's Wharf restaurants, for most of the
week.
"It smells appalling and will wind up on our beaches. I have been
sailing in this bay and other international harbours for 60 years and am
sad to say that Durban has become one of the most disgusting harbours in
the world," he said.
An eThekwini health pollution inspector said his department only became
aware of the problem on Thursday but it was investigating.
