The recent discourse on a global‚ international‚ or transnational
civil society implies the emergence of a new global political space,
distinguished from the world of international politics. What are
implications for democracy of the increasing number and activities of
NGOs, social movement organisations and private foundations globally?
In what sense do (or can) global civil society contribute to further
democratisation in an era of globalisation? In what sense can global
civil society undermine democratisation processes? These are key
issues in this special issue of Development Dialogue, originating in
a seminar held at the World Social Forum in Nairobi 2007.

development dialogue is addressed to individuals and organisations in
both the South and the North. development dialogue is intended to
provide a free forum for critical discussion of international
development priorities for the 21st century.

development dialogue is published by the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation.
