COSATU PRESS STATEMENT - 22 September 2006

National Office Bearers' meeting

The COSATU National Office Bearers (NOBs) elected at the historic Ninth
National Congress that ended yesterday, 21 September 2006, met for the first
time this morning, 22 September 2006.

The NOBs welcomed their newest member, comrade Sdumo Dlamini, who was
elected as First Deputy President.

The NOBs recognise their responsibility to lead the Federation on the path
of unity and to implement the resolutions adopted in the Congress. In
particular the NOBs are aware of the damage that has been caused by the
leadership contest that took place in the Congress, which was characterised
by the following:

1. A collapse of trust amongst all the previous NOBs, not just between
the individuals often mentioned in the media.
2. The tensions within and amongst all COSATU affiliated unions and
structures as a result of perceptions and real challenges that arose.
3. Dirty and foreign forms of lobbying which included smear campaigns
and inappropriate use of the media to win internal battles.
4. The existence of the report produced by the five Presidents of
COSATU unions, as mandated by the meeting of the Presidents and General
Secretaries of all the COSATU affiliated unions held on 24 August 2006.

The NOBs will hold a bosberaad on 4-5 October to begin a process of healing
within the COSATU NOBs that should eventually be taken to all affiliates and
structures of the Federation. These issues that led to this environment will
be confronted fully including how best we can develop and strengthen the
leadership collective that emerged out of the Ninth National Congress. All
these discussions will culminate in the COSATU Central Executive Committee
to be held on 20-23 November 2006.

We appeal to all affiliates and structures of the federation to also begin
this process of healing and not to allow the divisions that emerged in the
run-up to the Congress and in the Congress to be a permanent feature in the
future.
