You understand precious little of the work and politics of Cornel West if you don't grasp the centrality of feminism to it. He would be appalled that his work would be cited as supportive of the sort of apologies for Zuma, and the incredibly crude and mindless attacks on feminism, that have marked the worst of recent submissions to this list.

Race, in all its ethnic/ideological permutations, matters (cf some of
Cornell West's works here below -- its frequent absence from research and
related discursive issues pertaining to justice, voice, citizenship and the
quality of life of ordinary people, in South Africa and the world at large,
should be a concern to all honest academics, writers, commentators. Of
course, in my view, dialectical materialism offers the most powerful
approach to make sense of the instantiation and trajectory of
inclusion/exclusion and privileging/oppression of some members of society at
the expense of others [In the pedagogical mode of Paulo Freire, the
simultaneity of class, race, gender and a whole range of related ideologies
should be problematized accordingly]
