3rd Eastern Cape Harold Wolpe Lecture 11th May - Roger Ronnie: "Black
Economic Empowerment - No Change in the Class Position of Workers"
Rhodes University, University of Fort Hare and ECSECC in partnership with
the Harold Wolpe Memorial Trust are proud to invite you to the 3rd Harold
Wolpe lecture in the Series 'Citizenship, Society and Development in the
Eastern Cape'.
The lecture will be given by Roger Ronnie, General Secretary of the South
African Municipal Workers Union. Roger Ronnie will speak on "Black Economic
Empowerment - No Change in the Class Position of Workers."
The Lecture series will take place at Rhodes University, Faculty of
Humanities Seminar Room, Thursday 11th May at 18.30
The Lecture Series
The Harold Wolpe Lecture Series is an initiative from the three hosting
institutions to create a platform for rigorous debate on questions of
citizenship, society and development in the Eastern Cape.
It is expected that the Lecture Series will strengthen relationships between
academic and research institutions in the province and beyond. It is hoped
that through these debates interest will be generated on issues of
development in Southern Africa in general and the Eastern Cape in
particular.
The Lectures
University of Fort Hare
The University of Fort Hare series of lectures will attempt to be faithful
to the University's historical ethos, and focus on the theme of
"Citizenship, Democracy and the National Question"
15th February: Prof. Lungisile Ntsebeza, University of Cape Town
11th March: Neville Alexander, University of Cape Town
TBA: Eddie Maloka, Africa Institute of South Africa
Rhodes University
Rhodes University's contribution to the Wolpe Lecture Series will focus on
Black Economic Empowerment. The University is especially interested in
taking a critical perspective on an issue that is reconfiguring social
relations in our country.
Lectures will be given by leading figures the trade union movement, business
and government in May, June and August.
Eastern Cape Socio Economic Consultative Council
ECSECC's lectures will examine the space and role for the provincial sphere
of the State in socio-economic development planning and implementation in
post- Apartheid South Africa.
September: Dr Blade Nzimande, SACP - "Can the current socio-economic
development planning in South Africa re-construct the Bantustans, Townships
and Shack-Settlements?"
October: Dr Neo Simutanyi, University of Zambia - "The African State and
socio-economic development. Whither to post Apartheid South Africa."
November: Prof Patrick Bond, UKZN - "Local democracy and economic
development planning. What is the place for the provincial sphere of
government in the new democratic South Africa?"
