On 2000 figures given in the 'Energy outlook for SA' non-ferrous metals
(mainly aluminium and titanium) consume 61.5 PJ of a total of 613 PJ
consumed. So 10% would be about right for non-ferrous metals as a whole.
This doesn't, of course, include Mozal.
The usual reservations about the figures apply - I can't make their
industrial consumption figures add up to the 68% electricity attributed to
the industrial (including mining) sector.

(Anyone know how much aluminum chews up SA's electricity? Probably in
the 10% range with Richard's Bay, etc? And as a result of the smelters'
addiction, as the M&G last Friday shows, low-income CT residents are
being forced to turn to costly gas by Eskom.)
