The Economic Justice Network (EJN) of the Fellowship of Christian 
Council in Southern Africa (FOCCISA), the umbrella body for eleven 
Christian Churches in Southern Africa, is looking for 2 Project 
Assistants to work for its Economic Justice Desk based in Cape Town, 
South Africa. The mission for this desk is to strengthen the commitment 
of Christian Councils in Southern Africa in advocacy work on economic 
justice and to act as a catalyst for engaging people in the promotion of 
just economic and social structures in the SADC Region. In the next six 
months (August-December 2006), the Economic Justice Network is planning 
to strengthen its Desk and embark on research and advocacy work towards 
SADC.

Key Responsibilities:
The successful applicants will have insight into economic justice 
focusing more on monitoring state budgets, the WTO and related trade 
agreements, food security and current poverty eradication initiatives. 
The applicants are expected to be analytical, pro-active, action 
oriented with good understanding and knowledge of regional and 
international poverty debates. The communications officer will have good 
experience in communication strategies and knowledge in Website design 
and management of information.

Specific Duties
The prospective officers would report and work under the supervision of 
the project officer and will be responsible for the following:

Economic Justice Assistant Project Officer

• Assisting the project officer in developing and promoting the economic 
justice project
• Liaising and follow up on planned project activities with EJN’s 
stakeholders
• Assisting in developing effective advocacy strategies and 
interventions with EJN’s stakeholders.
• Assist in both desk and field research on particular issues of concern.
• Assisting in organizing workshops and conferences on economic justice 
matters
• Assisting in liaising, communicating and networking with other civil 
society groups and organizations working in the area of economic justice

Communications Assistant Project Officer

• Assist the project officer in designing and developing IEC materials
• Assist the Project officer to manage EJN’s Website
• Assist in networking with donors and other stakeholders
• Assist the project officer in production of materials for publication
• Assist project officer with workshop and conference materials

Requirements:
The applicants should have a first degree or must be working towards 
completion of their first degree in Economics, Political Economy, Social 
Sciences or any other related field. For the Communications Officer, 
specialization in Communication is a must. They must also have good 
understanding of social and economic justice issues affecting poor 
people in Southern Africa. Excellent analytical and writing skills; 
fluency in English and at least one of the South African languages; 
Computer literacy and familiarity with development issues in Southern 
Africa would be very desirable for the post.

Term: 6 months fixed term August 1st- December 31st, 2006.

Salary: Within the range of R 5,000-R 7,000 per month.
