Deadline Extended for ECOSOCC General Assembly Elections
The Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) of the African
Union is inviting participation from African and African Diaspora
civil society organizations to participate in the election of
representatives to the ECOSOCC General Assembly scheduled to be held
between June to December 2007. One hundred and thirty organizations
will be elected to participate as candidates for election or as
members of the Electoral College. In response to appeals from member
states and CSO’s, the ECOSOCC Secretariat has extended the deadline
to 15 May 2007 for receipt of applications for the elections. The
English and French applications can be downloaded at
www.pambazuka.org/aumonitor. Interested civil society organizations
should forward their applications electronically to cido at africa-
union.org or by post to: The Credentials Committee, ECOSOCC
Secretariat, c/o African Citizens Directorate (CIDO), African Union
Commission, P.O. Box 3243, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Retreat of Ministers of Foreign Affairs to Debate Union Government
From May 8-9, 2007, the Executive Council of the African Union will
hold a retreat of Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Durban, South
Africa to debate the union government proposal in advance of the
Heads of States Summit in June. The purpose of the retreat is to
"undertake in-depth discussions on the nature of the continent’s
integration agenda in order to determine where we are, where we are
going, when and how to get there." In addition to the retreat, the
second conference of African Ministers in charge of Integration will
be held on 7 – 11 June 2007 in Kigali, Rwanda, under the general
theme "Accelerating Regional Integration to Support the Growth and
Development of our Countries". For more information and documents,
