   MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF GHANA ADDRESSES AU

Nana Akufo-Addo, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of
Ghana and Chairperson of the Executive Council of the African Union
addressed the Executive Council on the 28th of June 2007.

“It is a distinct honour and a great pleasure for me to welcome, on
behalf of the President of the Republic, His Excellency John Agyekum
Kufuor, the Government and people of Ghana, all of you, friends and
colleagues, to a meeting of the Executive Council of our Union here
in our capital of Accra. Akwaaba, as you know, is our traditional
word of welcome. Akwaaba to each and every one of you, and we hope
that your stay amongst us will be enjoyable."

EXECUTIVE SECRETARY OF ECONOMIC COMMISSION ON AFRICA ADDRESSES AU

Abdoulie Janneh, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary
of the Economic Commission on Africa addressed the opening ceremony
of the Executive Council of the African Union on June 28, 2007.  He
stated: “I am glad to be here with you in this beautiful city of
Accra for the Eleventh Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of
the African Union. I wish to express through you, Mr. Chairman, our
profound gratitude to your dynamic President, the Government and
people of Ghana for their traditional warm hospitality.

This is in the true spirit of Pan-Africanism for which Ghana is well
known and it is quite fitting that the Grand Debate on the African
Union Government is taking place here, particularly as we all
celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ghana’s independence.

VICE-PRESIDENT OF GHANA ADDRESSES THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL

The statement by the Vice-President of the Republic of Ghana, H. E.
Alhaji Aliu Mahama, was delivered at the opening of the eleventh
ordinary session of the Executive Council of the African Union in
Accra, Ghana, on June 28, 2007.

AFRICAN CITIZENS PASSPORT ISSUED TO AFRICAN MINISTERS DURING OPENING
EXECUTIVE COUNCIL

During the opening ceremony of the Executive Council of Ministers of
Foreign Affairs, several civil society organizations personally
issued African Citizens passports to 53 national delegations. The
organisations intend to raise the profile of African citizenship in
the Proposal to establish Union Government.

SOLIDARITY FOR AFRICAN WOMEN’S RIGHTS (SOAWR) PUBLIC FORUM

The Public forum on the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and
Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women and regional integration was
held on 26th June 2006 at the British Council Hall, Accra Ghana. The
public forum was set out to discuss the relevance of the Protocol
within the grand debate on African Union Government or Regional
Integration which is the theme for the African Union Summit. The
Public forum was also discussed the gender perspectives within the
proposed continental government.

AU MUST ADDRESS ECONOMIC INTEGRATION AND TRADE

Anti-poverty campaigners urge African Union Government to address
economic integration and trade issues

The Assembly of the Heads of States of the African Union (AU) is
taking place in Accra, Ghana, from July 2nd to 3rd to discuss a
proposal of an African Union government. Just a few days before the
Assembly, 15 African national coalitions from the Global Call to
Action against Poverty (GCAP) joined other pan-African civil society
organisations in Accra to discuss the proposal and provide their
input.

DARFUR SOLIDARITY DURING AU SUMMIT

On June 27, African Civil Society Organizations (CSO’s) held two
events to show solidarity for the people in Darfur, as well as
discuss strategies to end the on-going crises. These events are in
connection with the African Union Summit taking place in Accra, being
held during the Summit to stress the necessity of ensuring that Darfur
is included in the debate of a Union Government.

UA DOIT SE PENCHER SUR L’INTéGRATION ECONOMIQUE ET LE COMMERCE

Des militants anti-pauvreté enjoignent le Gouvernement de l’Union
Africaine à se pencher sur les problèmes liés à l’intégration
économique et au commerce.

L’Assemblée des Chefs d’Etat de l’Union Africaine qui se tiendra du 2
au 3 juillet à Accra se penchera sur la proposition de création d’un
Gouvernement d’Union pour l’Afrique. Quelques jours avant l’ouverture
de cette Assemblée, quinze coalitions nationales africaines œuvrant au
sein de l’Action Mondiale contre la Pauvreté (AMCP) se sont jointes à
d’autres organisations de la société civile à Accra pour examiner et
réagir à la proposition de Gouvernement de l’Union.

LE PASSEPORT DU CITOYEN AFRICAIN REMIS AU MINISTRE GADIO

Un Sénégalais qui veut se rendre au Kenya doit aller chercher son
visa auprès de l’ambassade de Grande Bretagne à Dakar. De même, un
Kenyan désirant aller au Sénégal verra sa demande de visa traitée par
l’ambassade de France à Nairobi. «Une aberration» pour la coalition
d’organisations de la société civile africaine, dont ActionAid,
Fahamu, Oxfam, etc., qui a procédé, le 28 juin, au lancement officiel
du Passeport du Citoyen Africain. Un événement qui a eu lieu à Accra,
après la cérémonie d’ouverture du Conseil des ministres africains des
Affaires étrangères.

LANCEMENT DE PAPIERS SUR LES ETATS-UNIS D’AFRIQUE

L’Institut d’Etudes de Sécurité (IES), base à Pretoria, Afrique du
Sud, a contribué à sa manière au ‘Grand Débat sur le Gouvernement de
l’Union’ en procédant au lancement de sept publications sur les
Etats-Unis d’Afrique, ce mercredi 27 juin a Accra. Les cinq sont en
Anglais et les deux restants en Français.

La Diaspora et l’Intégration Africaine

La diaspora doit jouer un rôle stratégique dans le Grand débat sur la
marche vers une Union des Etats Africains et la réalisation effective
de ce projet. Lors du débat de la société civile continentale,
certains n’ont pas manqué de rappeler que des éminents membres de la
diaspora ont été, tels William Dubois, Marcus Garvey, ont été parmi
les plus virulents chantres de l’unification de l’Afrique et des
Africains vivant sur le continent et ailleurs,il y a de cela
plusieurs décennies.

PERSPECTIVES DES FEMMES SUR LE GOUVERNEMENT CONTINENTAL

Nous, la Solidarité pour les Droits des Femmes Africaines (SOAWR)
sommes réunis aujourd’hui pour pousser les chefs d’Etats et de
Gouvernements Africains à s’engager pour unir le peuple africain à
travers une approche genre en maintenant les droits des femmes
l´égalité des chances aussi bien pour les hommes que pour les femmes
au centre du grand débat sur le Gouvernement Africain.
