   MEMBERS OF HUMAN AND PEOPLES’ RIGHTS COMMISSION ELECTED

The five new members of the African Commission on Human and People’s
Rights have been elected.

The election of the five new members of the African Commission on
Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR) (four women and one man, see list
below), took place during the eleventh Ordinary Session of the
Executive Council, in line with the the 9th African Union Summit in
Accra, Ghana.

  CHAMBAS ADVOCATES CLEAR TIMELINES FOR UNION GOVERNMENT

President of the ECOWAS Commission, Mohammed Chambas, has said there
is the need to set ‘clear timelines’ on the achievement of a Union
Government for Africa, which is the sole agenda of the ongoing 9th
summit of the African Union in Accra, Ghana.

  WORLD BANK PROVIDES US$5.7B GRANTS, LOANS TO AFRICA

PANA – The World Bank announced Monday that it provided a record
US$5.7 billion in credits and grants to Sub-Saharan Africa in the
fiscal year ending 30 June 2007, up from US$4.7 billion in fiscal
2006.

  KADHAFI: EUROPE-BOUND ILLEGAL EMIGRATION HUMILIATES AFRICA

PANA - Libyan Leader Moammar Kadhafi has described crossing of the
Mediterranean Sea on makeshift boats by African youths attempting to
emigrate to Europe as a “tragedy and humiliation for Africa”, and
urged them to become more attached to Africa, to live and “die here”.
