Subject: [AU-Monitor] Book salutes Africa's women resilience
Activists advocating and campaigning for women's rights in Africa gathered
today in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for the launch of a book which celebrates
the collective determination to secure women's rights in Africa. The book
titled Grace, Tenacity and Eloquence: The Struggle for Women's Rights in
Africa is co-published by Fahamu and the Solidarity for African Women's
Rights (SOAWR).
It gathers together articles about the campaign for ratification of the
Protocol on women's rights which was spearheaded by SOAWR. The articles were
initially published in the prize-winning weekly electronic newsletter,
Pambazuka News, published by Fahamu. Sharing their ideas and experiences,
the authors describe how they won the cross-continental campaign for a
Protocol to protect the rights of African women. They also reflect on
necessary measures which will ensure that the rights enshrined in the
Protocol are enjoyed by women in every country.
The book offers a poignant reminder of the difficulties and challenges faced
by Africa's women as a result of harsh cultural, traditional and social
prejudices. It salutes their resilience and sense of purpose in seeking to
overcome these shackles with grace, tenacity and eloquence. Significantly,
it showcases some of the key milestones in overcoming the injustices faced
by Africa's women in the quest to affirm their rights.
Foremost among these salient moments is the adoption of the Protocol on the
Rights of Women in Africa in July 2003 by the continent's leaders. This
Protocol represents the most comprehensive legal framework on women's rights
in Africa. The tenacity of the SOAWR in mobilising and campaigning for the
ratification of the Protocol by national governments is cited and
acknowledged.
"Grace, Tenacity and Eloquence: The Struggle for Women's Rights in Africa",
says Wangari Kinoti, Programme Co-ordinator at the Education Centre for
Women in Democracy, " is a long overdue bird's eye view not only of women's
rights concerns in the continent which are probably already well known by
many, but also of the small and big actions women are taking everyday to
emphasise our humanity, dignity, equality and agency".
