This decision is yet another slap in the face of
Afropessimists who always snigger at Africa's ability
to build a progressive consebnsus.
It also indicates a number of positive benefits seen
by many of us who have remained engaged with the Union
inspite of all kinds of challenges;
1. A sense of collective shame has returned to
official diplomatic and political activities at the
highest levels.
2. There is an incremental gain on remaining engaged
using both quiet and not so quiet diplomatic channels
3. there are many governments and leaders in the AU
able to put principles before diplomatic finesse.
4. The summit may be the most important of the
institutions of the AU but lobbying must be done at
country level and also wuithin the various structures
well before hand: the Commission . Ambassadors,
Executive Council.
If we take our imnstitutions seriously enough to
leasrn more about their processes and dynamicas we can
build critical mass of opinion to say no to 'bad
conduct ' by member states.
Congratulations to of you in Addis and those who are
not there but contributed to making the Sudan
Presidence a matter of public discourse providing no
room for a fudge.
