China-africa -- Discussion list on China in Africa

About China-africa
English (USA)

Fahamu is organising the first day and half meeting for African civil society only, the objective of which is to develop a clearer strategy for African civil society engagement on the issues related to China in Africa. Over the course of the last year in particular, many valuable research and advocacy initiatives have begun across the continent in an effort to address the opportunities and challenges of China’s increased involvement in Africa, the scope of which ranges from trade, aid and development to peace and security and human rights. However, the efforts of civil society and other stakeholders tend to be disparate and localized. This meeting is an attempt to gather a greater understanding of the different stakeholders, their agenda and strategies while collectively developing joint civil society strategies and positions where these are possible so as to build effective platforms for change. Additionally, the meeting may serve as a launch from which to create a formalized network of African civil society and citizens working on issues related to China in Africa, from which to coordinate common positions, joint action and mutual support.

As a first step, this listserve has been set up for the African participants to the dialogue for us to better communicate and make use of our limited time in Nairobi together. Fahamu, though jointly organising this meeting, seeks to serve as a facilitator and catalyst for your ideas and agenda. As such, we have drafted a tentative agenda for the two day strategy meeting for which we hope to receive your comments and feedback before finalizing. Notably, we also hope that you will share short descriptions of your current and/or future work related to China’s involvement in Africa (1-2 paragraphs will suffice). This draft agenda also suggests short presentations (no longer than 10 mins) from participants on their research and/or advocacy work on China in Africa which will form the basis for broader discussion, shared knowledge and mutual learning. Please do let us know if you are able to contribute to these presentations.
